The History of Vigilantes Lodge

Vigilantes Lodge (No. 7264) was founded in 1953, and has met continuously to this day.

The Lodge's history is intricately woven into the town's heritage and has many interesting members among its ranks.

A brief history

During the late 1940's and 1950's there was a surge of applicants seeking to become Freemasons.

Records of the Lord Worsley Lodge show that at times, acceptance of applicants was suspended. Even joining members' applications were held in obeyance.

At this time, Cleethorpes Masonic Hall was being converted and dedicated.

On 25th August 1952, members of Lord Worsley Lodge proposed a new Lodge be formed and in a special meeting on 6th October 1952 twenty-five Brethren expressed a wish to become Founding Members.

A formal recommendation for Grand Lodge to grant a warrant to a new "Vigilantes Lodge" was signed by Worshipful Master Bro. Laurie Johnson and his Wardens.

The Lodge remained exceptionally popular for many years; with a recorded letter in 1965 stating that the waiting list for new members was at least THREE YEARS!
